The best time to trade gold
When gold moves most and spreads are tightest, session by session, with the hours to avoid and how news changes the picture.
Gold is most active from the London open to the end of the London–New York overlap, roughly 07:00 to 16:00 UTC, and especially 12:00 to 16:00 UTC, when both centres trade and US data is released.
Session by session
| Hours (UTC, standard time) | Session | What gold usually does |
|---|---|---|
| 21:00 to 00:00 | Late US, Sydney | Thin and slow; spreads wider at the 22:00 rollover |
| 00:00 to 07:00 | Tokyo, Asia | Steady ranges; Chinese demand can drive moves |
| 07:00 to 12:00 | London | Volume arrives; direction for the day often set |
| 12:00 to 16:00 | London–New York overlap | The most volatile hours; US data at 12:30 or 13:30 |
| 16:00 to 21:00 | New York afternoon | Moves fade; Fed speakers and FOMC days are the exception |
During summer time in the UK and US, these times shift an hour earlier in UTC. The session clock shows them in your own time zone.
Times to be careful
- The first minutes after big US data (NFP, CPI, FOMC): spreads widen and price can jump past stops.
- The daily rollover (5pm New York): spreads widen for a few minutes.
- Sunday’s open: prices can gap from Friday’s close. See weekly open and gaps.
- Holidays: thin liquidity, especially Christmas week and US holidays.
Matching your style to the clock
Scalpers want the overlap’s movement and tight spreads. Swing traders care less about the hour they enter. Either way, check the economic calendar before you start.
